Cardinal Kevin Farrell announces death of Pope Francis

Who is the Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church?

The death of Pope Francis was announced by Cardinal Kevin Ferrell, the Vatican Camerlengo. Who is a Camelengo?

The term “camerlengo” (plural: camerlenghi) is an Italian word that translates to “chamberlain.” Within the Vatican, it refers to a specific and important office:

Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church: This is a cardinal appointed by the Pope who holds a significant role, especially during the sede vacante, the period when the papacy is vacant due to the death or resignation of a Pope.

Here’s a breakdown of the Camerlengo’s key responsibilities:

Verification of Papal Death: The Camerlengo’s first duty upon the death of the Pope is to officially confirm it. Traditionally, this involved calling the Pope by his baptismal name three times.

Sealing and Securing: The Camerlengo seals the Pope’s private apartments and study to safeguard them.

Administration During the Sede Vacante: The Camerlengo is responsible for administering the temporal goods and rights of the Holy See during the interregnum. This means overseeing the day-to-day operations of Vatican City and the Holy See, ensuring essential functions continue. However, their authority is limited to necessary actions and doesn’t extend to making doctrinal decisions or significant appointments.

Preparation for the Conclave: The Camerlengo plays a crucial role in organizing the conclave, the meeting of cardinals who will elect the new Pope. This includes logistical arrangements and ensuring the security and sanctity of the election process.

Destruction of the Papal Ring and Seal: The Camerlengo oversees the ceremonial breaking of the Fisherman’s Ring and the papal seal. This symbolizes the end of the deceased Pope’s authority and prevents their misuse.

Notifications: The Camerlengo informs the Cardinal Vicar of Rome, who then announces the Pope’s death to the people of Rome. The Camerlengo also notifies the College of Cardinals.

In the case of Pope Francis’s death, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the current Camerlengo, carried out the initial announcement. Cardinal Farrell was born in Dublin, Ireland.
