St. Kizito Parish Distributes 570 Tree Seedlings in Care for Creation Initiative
St. Kizito Parish this morning renewed its commitment to environmental stewardship with the blessing and distribution of tree seedlings to the various Small Christian Communities (SCCs).
The seedlings were blessed by the Parish Priest, Fr. Martin Mulholland, before being distributed to SCC representatives for planting within their respective communities. This activity forms part of the 2025/26 St. Kizito Parish Environmental Redress Initiative, undertaken in response to the Holy Father’s appeal for care of creation as articulated in Laudato Si’.

In total, 570 tree seedlings were distributed. Of these, 200 seedlings were generously donated free of charge by the Lilongwe City Council Nursery. The remaining seedlings were procured through the project’s funding, which was made possible by the support of St. Patrick’s Missionary Society, supplemented by contributions from the Parish Council.
The seedlings distributed included a combination of indigenous and fruit tree varieties – M’bawa, Msangu, Acacia, Cyndrella, Mango, Orange, Pawpaw, Moringa and Guava.
Through this initiative, parishioners are encouraged not only to plant trees but also to nurture and protect them as a long-term commitment to environmental restoration, food security, and community well-being. Pope Francis reminds us in Laudato Si’ that “Humanity still has the ability to work together in building our common home” (LS 13), a call that this parish initiative seeks to answer in a practical and community-driven way.

The project is being implemented through the SCCs, ensuring that care for creation is lived out at the grassroots level in Area 47 and Area 15.
St. Kizito Parish extends sincere gratitude to St. Patrick’s Missionary Society, the Lilongwe City Council Nursery, the Parish Council, and all parishioners who have supported this initiative. All recipients are encouraged to take good care of the seedlings entrusted to them so that they may grow into lasting signs of faith, responsibility, and hope for future generations.
