The Archdiocese of Lilongwe conducted an orientation session on the Child and Vulnerable Adults Safeguarding Policy at St Kizito Parish. Fr John Chibweza and Sr Teresa Mulenga facilitated the session for the parish leadership that comprised chairpersons of small Christian communities, ministries and apostolates.
The policy was developed by the Malawi Conference of Catholic Bishops (MCCB) to guide all parishes and Catholic institutions on child protection and safeguarding policies, as well as the protection of vulnerable adults. The facilitators provided guidelines on the roles of leadership in identifying and reporting issues. The facilitators explained the different kinds of abuses that can happen, like abuse of authority, human and child trafficking, sexual abuse and exploitation, abusive and demeaning language, and excessive punishments, among others.
